The Economist magazine cover story, Oct 17, 2024: America’s economy is bigger and better than ever. The cover headline blared: The Envy of the World. The subtitle question: Will politics bring it back to Earth? Now we know the short answer: Yes. [check out the link*. You’ll need to sign in to read the full article but the bit you can see actually tells the full story].

The truth of our economy couldn’t penetrate the MAGA misinformation bubble. The truth of the Biden administration – in an effort to restore the middle-class – finally stimulating the economy from the middle out instead of the long debunked trickle down. An economy that is the envy of the world. Too bad. I suppose it’s possible that the promised tariffs, Project 2025, the economics of mass deportation and the full impact of the oligarch’s DOGE will pop the MAGA fantasy. We’ll see.

What’s certain is now it all starts. The fallout of mass-misinformation, the plummet back to hard reality. The full impact of the nation landing hard on its mind-bogglingly-self-destructive choice.

Bitter Sweet [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

And isn’t that the point of a tradition? To connect the memories of the past to the celebration of today in order to pass them into the future? As Jean Houston once wrote: we are the burning point of the ancestral ship. In our ritual we honor the ancestors en route to joining them.

Conservation and progress need not be at odds.

Today is the Solstice. I just read that the Latin origin of the word “solstice” is “the sun stands still”. “This is because the sun’s apparent movement north or south stops before changing direction.”

In this moment, all of us, regardless of religious tradition or to which date we assign the light’s return, in lighting our candles, making our meals, singing our songs…we stand still with the sun. Just for a moment, in the pause between far and near, we acknowledge that we are the connective tissue between yesterday and tomorrow, bearers of the ritual, missing those we no longer see yet grateful beyond words for those we hug, hold close, and send into the future with leftovers from the feast. Bitter sweet.

A Joining With [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

I had a minor revelation (again) while we were working on this cartoon. What’s the question we ask when we go to the dictionary to look up a word? We ask, “What does it mean?” The operative word is “it”.

English speakers are bound by the word “it.” “It” magically, unconsciously, turns everything into an object. A thing. A thing to be pursued, chased, grasped. Found. Possessed. Bought. Sold.

Hope. Happiness. Kindness. Aspiration. Desire. Yearning…Love.

And what if “it” can’t be found or bought? What if “it” can only be tended, nurtured, like a flame? What if “it” can only be shared. Felt. What if “it” wasn’t a “thing” – an object – at all? What if “it” isn’t a transaction?What if “it” is a warmth? What then?

Is it possible for me to give you hope? Or is it more likely that hope is how we experience the sunrise after a cold dark night? A dawning both inside and out. A joining with…

Regardless of what our language might lead us to believe, hope, like love, is a how, not a what.

I know this: if we could find “it” and wrap “it” and give “it”, we would. Our hope for this season? That “it” finds you.

Share It [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

Call it a reprise. A smack-dab from the ghost of holidays past. It is most appropriate for this day. Perhaps more appropriate than when it was originally published.

Yesterday LittleBabyScion went into the shop for some care. We walked home in bitter cold, wondering what to do with a car-free day. “I think it’s time to decorate,” she said. And, so, we did. Tiny trees and silver baubles rolled out of their boxes and into the nooks and crannies of our rooms. Eileen’s tree unfolded her branches and is now resplendent with light. When the sun set, we sat and appreciated our good work. The spirit.

I do not like what it feels like outside of our house. I am troubled by what it bodes. But I adore how it feels inside our home. It is warm, simple, and heart-felt. A sanctuary. It is impossible not to feel it. And, in feeling it, it is impossible not to share it.

The Shears Are A Comin’ [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

“A concept of a plan.” Buckle up. Our already exploitative healthcare system is about to become a full-on-rodeo of fleecing.

Consider this: In the United States of America, medical bills account for 62% of all bankruptcies. That’s up from 40% in 1999. Even the advent of the Affordable Care Act – an act that made healthcare more available with government assistance – yet an act without regulating the amount healthcare providers can charge – has created what Horatio aptly named, “A money-gouging-machine.” An unregulated market was born; skyrocketing costs by design – a surprise to no one .

“As it turns out, medical bankruptcy is almost unheard of outside of the United States.”

It’s no wonder. Our healthcare spending per capita is “almost twice the average of other wealthy countries.”

The night Kerri broke both of her wrists we stood outside the medical center debating which door to go through: The Emergency Room door or The Urgent Care door. The question we debated while she writhed in pain: which door would be a slower path to bankruptcy. We had a healthcare plan with exorbitant premiums but like most Americans were afraid to use it.

And now, as if the exploitation were not egregious enough, coming down the pike is the great maga-republican repeal of the ACA on the promise of a concept of a plan. I feel the shears-a-comin’.

A Singular Dedication [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

Yes. We did. We spontaneously exploded our living spaces. We rearranged furniture all day. Nothing has landed for certain. It’s all a work in progress.

When the dust settled and we stopped to eat dinner, Kerri looked at me and said, “You know my favorite part of the day? The whole time I didn’t once think about politics.” I didn’t either. It was a refreshing respite from the coming storm, from the despot-elect and his clown-car-cabinet-nominees.

Our home became a sanctuary during Covid. We turned our creative hearts into making a safe haven, a beautiful space, a place in which we could isolate yet also continue to grow and move forward. Our spontaneous house rearrangement comes from the same impulse: in a nation dedicated to falling back into the fascist-dark, we will create a safe space in which we can nurture our hearts and minds and continue moving into the positive, the generative, the light.

Like all of us in this nation – and there are many – who refuse to surrender our decency and goose-step into the mistakes of the past, we are not going back. And that singular dedication begins in the one place we can control – our home.

For Real [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab.]

What is real? It’s not so easy to answer this very simple question these days. With A-I manufacturing videos and images that seem real, with foreign interference in our elections, with a pathological liar about to once again take the national bully pulpit and a propaganda fox willing to magnify his hooey, with people believing tik-tok, X and instagram are sources of news…it is damn hard to know what is real. It’s damn hard to believe the dull-witted-ness in ascendence.

Who is real? This is a much more complex question. A heartbreaking question.

Post election we’re everywhere seeing and hearing from the maga-madcaps the phrase , “Family over politics”. Yet, a vote for the despot-elect was a vote against my son who is gay. A vote for the rapist-in-chief was a vote against my daughter’s rights. It was a vote against my wife’s rights. She was raped so it’s not a small thing to her that half the nation, including family and friends, seem okay to look the other way. To minimize his multiple sexual assaults as locker room talk. She feels deeply in her body – her soul – the national endorsement of rape. The national assent of sexual violence.

Every time she sees the phrase,”Family over politics,” Kerri hisses, “Back-at-you!” Real family, real friends would have thought to protect our children’s health and well-being before voting against them. They would have thought to protect our nation from an avowed fascist with retribution fantasies; they would have thought before voting against basic morality. They would have had the simple dignity to consider the sexual predation, the pathological lying and gross indecency of their candidate. Instead, they cheered. They voted for it. It’s left us nauseous with the question, “Are you for real?”

They put politics (if you can call it that) over family (if you can call it that). For real.

A Little Bit. A Lotta Bit [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

Apparently social media is smoking hot with maga-voters who finally decided to look-up the word “tariff”. It seems that they are astounded to discover that they (we) pay the tax, not China. Or Mexico. They are somehow puzzled to learn that the cost of living under their candidate’s tariff plan is – and always was – promised to escalate the cost of living. Also on the info-grill: the reality of the phrase “mass deportation” is beginning to dawn on the red voters. It’s just now occurring to them that their vote has actual consequences that impact their family and friends.

A little bit of illumination a lotta bit too late.

This quote from an NPR interview with Republican strategist Sarah Longwell is worthy of a laugh/cry. It’s crossed my screen a few times this morning: “When I ask voters in focus groups if they think Donald Trump is an authoritarian, the #1 response by far is, “What’s an authoritarian?”

What’s an authoritarian? Good question. Well. I guess we’re about to find out.

ignorance (noun): lack of knowledge and information*

*dear trump voter: authoritarians rely on your ignorance and exploit your rage.**

**It may feel good up front to vote your rage but that good-feeling rapidly dissipates when a little-bit-of-knowledge-and-a-lotta-bit-of-reality sets in. Next time, if there is a next time (look up the word “authoritarian”) you might want to pull your head out of the fox-misinformation-hole, ask a few relevant questions and look up a word or two before you fill in the bubble.***

***informing yourself is a relatively easy thing to do and as you may have just discovered only takes a few minutes (for instance, how long did it take to look up the word “tariff”?). On the other hand, cleaning up the horror created by an authoritarian takes generations. Look it up.

One Basic Choice [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

I heard this phrase this morning: supra partisan. Transcending party. I heard the “supra partisan” phrase relative to 400 historians – of all political backgrounds and stripes – endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Their message: the urgency of the moment requires all of us to transcend party and vote for country. We’ve not seen a threat to our existence as a democracy like this since 1860.

Their statement is not hyperbole. The threat posed to our democracy by maga and their aspiring dictator is undeniable. It is historic. It is on our doorstep.

In maga-land, the patterns and lessons of history are threatening precisely because they reveal maga as a fascist movement. It is the reason that their Project 2025 blueprint includes the elimination of the Department of Education. Currently, they are banning books and waging a war on the nation’s libraries. They desire a willing and ignorant citizenry who will without question give over their rights – give over their minds – and follow the lies and whims of the great leader. No debate. No opposition. No questioning. No choice. No thinking. No voice.

No freedom.

A familiar quote comes to mind:

“Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” ~ George Santayana

This election should be a no-brainer but, alas, it is not. On Tuesday we will demonstrate that a majority of us have paid attention, learned from history, and vote to preserve our democracy. Or, that a majority of us chooses to ignore history and willingly, intentionally, vote to goose-step into the well-worn and well-known fascist horror story.

It all boils down to one very basic choice.
