No Words [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

It’s ironic to me that the “progressives” – Bernie Sanders and AOC – are waging an all out effort to preserve our democracy (one might use the word “conserve”) while the “conservatives” are waging a campaign of destruction meant to change the very essence of our governance; they’re calling it “progress”.

The Republican party of “small government” and “fiscal responsibility” are once again blowing the deficit into outer space while weaponizing the government to strong arm anyone who opposes their agenda or suggests that the Constitution ought to be honored.

Tucked into the grotesque big beautiful bill is language that “disarms the courts.” With the Republican Congress already cowed, the courts are the only remaining line separating us – a democracy – from an authoritarian state. The Republican members of the house actually voted to forward a bill that effectively ends our system of government. Is their a word more appropriate than “betrayal”? Perfidy? Treachery?

Their bill, the horror that they call big and beautiful, blatantly and without shame takes from the poor and gives to the rich – a reverse Robin Hood maneuver.

There just aren’t enough words to describe how base, how vile, how utterly chicken-hearted…they convene their sham-committees in the dark of night because they know how repugnant their big beautiful bill actually is. They know. They do not care. Neglect? Disregard? What words can we use to describe this level of depravity?

Vampires work at night because the light of day is lethal to them. Republicans, like vampires – as is apparent in their big bill – desire to drink the life-blood of the most vulnerable. We can only hope that there is enough light let into their chamber to kill this horror-bill before it sucks the life-blood from the most vulnerable people of this nation – and for no greater purpose than giving a massive tax cut to the already ultra-wealthy…and calling it progress.

No words.

[There is, however a ubiquitous question: What do we do?]

Out The Door [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

Years ago we created a single panel cartoon called At The Door. The image never changed: DogDog and BabyCat sitting at the front door, staring out into the world. Dogga, ever the idealist conversing with a hyper-cynical BabyCat. No syndicate wanted our cartoon so we let it slip quietly into the portfolio of “tried but no takers”.

Smack-Dab is a cartoon that we never intended to syndicate. It was – and is – for fun. The dirty little secret of Smack-Dab is that I’ve never drawn any of it. Kerri has always cobbled it together from earlier Chicken Marsala panels, mixing and matching images that she plucked from one of the hundreds of Chicken strips. That was, until her computer died. Her Photoshop capacity died with it and, being a child of the Depression, she refuses to replace it as long as her dinosaur iPad Mini is still chugging along.

So, Smack-Dab has unintentionally become a variation of At The Door, only instead of our over-enthusiastic dog and our deeply-distrusting cat, we’re the characters staring out into the community, a community that we more-and-more do not recognize. We see a nation that sells its soul for an airplane. A Republican Congress that stands silently by as bribery, grift, and corruption corrode the foundation of our nation. They could stop it in a moment, this Project 2025 public execution of our democracy, but they are complicit. They are now the poster-party of “penny-wise-pound-foolish;” sacrificing the greater Constitution to protect their personal interest. And that is the sickness that poisons the blood of The United States of America: personal gain smothers community service. It is the cancer that is threatening to kill our nation-body.

And we watch out the door. We find ourselves, smack-dab in the middle of middle age, smack-dab in the historical moment when our leadership failed, when morality collapsed and cowardice prevailed: a golden airplane for a bribe and a military parade to mask the shallow men and women who exchange the land of the free and the home of the brave for a few coins, a Saudi golf course, and a chance to keep their seats warm. And we-the-people, all of us, live inside of their sickness.

Our Human Purpose [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

It really boils down to a mistake in purpose.

The purpose of business is profit.

The purpose of government is public service.

When government serves a profit motive – the motive of business – it loses sight of its unique purpose: service to the public. It fundamentally loses its reason for being.

We on the woke-side-of-the-spectrum believe the maga-movement to be misguided because they rallied behind a business motive to solve the problems of government – thereby making the problems worse. A government that prioritizes profit motives over public service is destined to fail.

What the MAGA-mob doesn’t see is that we are all pissed off for the same reason: public service has been co-opted by self-interest. The top 1% now own and control more wealth than the bottom 90%. The solution is not to throw gasoline on the fire. The solution is not to tear down democracy. The solution is to reclaim the purpose of government.

On the trail, people are beautiful because they support each other. They share a common purpose. They inhabit a common story. They know that success on the trail is a team sport. It is an infinite game rather than a win/lose contest. It favors generosity rather than meanness.

We will know when we’ve recovered the purpose of our government when we – all of us on this national trail – favor generosity rather than revel in unkindness. Service to others – supporting and being supported – is what makes us beautiful specifically because it fulfills our human purpose.

The Epicenter of Dumb [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

“The message here, girls, is clear: yes, if you marry the son of a billionaire, you too can have the life of a medieval peasant!” ~ Van Badham, The Guardian

If you wonder how far down the rabbit hole* we’ve gone, you need look no further than “MAGA Republicans marking Women’s History Month by pushing a bill that could block millions of women from voting just for changing their last name after marriage.” It’s called the SAVE ACT. Restricting a woman’s right to vote was a top priority of the Republicans and the new administration.

Here’s all you need to know: “In every presidential election since 1996, a majority of women have preferred the Democratic candidate.”

So, welcome to the Womanosphere. Branding servitude, scrubbing the 19th Amendment. Moving women back into pre-Civil War times. Apparently greatness necessitates a glossy paint job covering over women’s suffrage.

I suppose I can understand why white guys with big tires on their Silverados voted for this dangerous nonsense. I will never understand why women, people of color, veterans…or anyone with a half a brain, a sliver of heart, or a remnant of moral compass thought this Project 2025 march-to-authoritarianism was legitimate or remotely a good idea. The elimination of Constitutional and Civil rights, the gleeful resurrection of segregation, a broad brush white-washing of our history. The devaluation of women.

I’m dumbfounded. I’m staring at the very epicenter of dumb. It is brutal. It is dark. It is ugly.

I’m going to go make Kerri a sandwich.

*“Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” is often interpreted as a symbolic journey of growing up and facing the uncertainties of life, particularly during adolescence. (AI Overview). In other words, MAGA world refuses to grow up and face the uncertainties of life – like free and fair elections. It’s apparently easier to rig the elections, throw up obstacles to voters, than it is to come to the table with honesty, with ideas to legislate that serve the greater community. They are swirling in perpetual adolescence; stunted growth. The Womanosphere (insert eye-roll) is just the latest jaw-dropping example.

The Baseline [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

It is the challenge of our times: discerning what is real and what is not. We lack a baseline for truth.

Photographs used to be proof. Video and audio clips were once incontestable. No more.

We live in bubbles of outrage fueled by easy misinformation. Journalism has morphed into entertainment that amps-up the outrage. Fuels the division. Manufactured division is probably our baseline. Our shared truth.

As MM recently wrote, attributing some of our lack of discernment to, “a toxic level of the willing suspension of disbelief required for the mass consumption of “reality television”. After all, reality tv has nothing to do with reality. The act of pointing a camera at something changes the basic nature of the event into a performance. We behave differently on camera than we do off-camera. Reality television is not real just as “truth social” has nothing to do with truth. We are drowning in misnomers. We are lost in our branding.

MAGA world likes to point at 47 and call him a businessman. That, of course, is a role he played on television. In reality, off-camera, he’s driven his companies into bankruptcy six times. There’s an entire industry of media apologists and spin doctors dedicated to painting lipstick on this pig, committed to torturing cowboy-sense out of his dangerous nonsense, his incessant lies, his grift.

In the absence of discernment, conspiracy theories grow like so much mold. Many in this nation without question (or the capacity to question) swallow swill and call it sugar. Heavily addicted to outrage, fed a steady diet of an anger-drug by our media, we are rendered incapable of shared truth and impervious to common (shared) sense. And, sadly, fact-checking seems to take too much effort.

We eschew discernment.

We are in desperate need of Occam’s razor: “a guiding principle in logic and philosophy that suggests when faced with multiple explanations for a phenomenon, the simplest one is usually the best. It emphasizes the importance of minimizing unnecessary assumptions or complexities when seeking an explanation.”

The simplest explanation: “from 1981 to 2021, $50 trillion moved from the bottom 90% of Americans to the top 1%.” The minimum wage hasn’t risen since 2009. Manufactured division, divided as we are in our media-fueled bubbles of outrage, keeps us easily distracted from our actual antagonists.

Perpetually seeing red prohibits us from seeing the rest of the color-sense-spectrum, prohibits us from discernment rooted in a baseline of shared truth. It’s a fact: 90% of us grow poorer and poorer as the 1% openly trashes our democracy to give themselves a tax cut and a guaranteed cheap labor force. Is it no wonder that we are outraged?

Outrage should be our baseline. Just not focused at each other.

Begin With The Words [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

republic (noun): a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.

“The term [Republic] originates from Latin, meaning “matters of the public.” Republics emerged as a response to absolute monarchies, aiming to create systems more responsive to the will of the people.” EBSCO

No child or adult in this nation has ever stood before a flag and sworn allegiance to a monarch or dictator. The same is true of our elected representatives. And yet, this Republican administration, the Republican Congress in their obeisance, consolidate power into the executive, into the hands of a single man.

The conservative justices on the Supreme Court, men and a woman who also stand before flags and pledge their allegiance, granted this president immunity from the law, effectively making him a monarch, effectively undermining the republic.

The Republican Congress and conservative Supremes no longer swear allegiance to the Republic or to the Constitution, but to a dictator, a divided nation under authoritarianism.

No longer a Republic, liberty and justice for all is the first casualty.

Many law firms and universities suspend their commitment to truth and abandon their allegiance to the law (the Constitution) and the pursuit of knowledge. They genuflect and swear oaths to the dictator.

Who knew that this nation that prides itself on rugged individualism, the veneration of liberty and the exercise of free will would roll over so easily, pledging their allegiance to something so sullied as a rapist wrapped in something so ugly as Christian Nationalism; a bully, pathological liar with nary a scruple to his name? Given all of our cowboy swagger I imagined we were made of sturdier stuff.

You’d think our pledge of allegiance to the flag of The United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands…would have inspired more fortitude in our elected leaders, more respect from our highest court, more dedication from practitioners of the law and seekers of knowledge.

If we are going to ask our children, our citizens, to place their hands over their hearts and speak the words in unison, then the Pledge of Allegiance certainly deserves more deference from our populace and the representatives that we elect.

Perhaps, in speaking it by rote, we’ve either forgotten or perhaps do not fully understand what it means? Let’s begin with the words “Allegiance” as it relates to the word “Republic”…

allegiance (noun): loyalty. commitment. faithfulness. fidelity.

To what do we pledge our allegiance (return to the top)?

Cleansed By Gaslight Fire [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

I understand that over in fox-news-land they barely mention the stock-market-free-fall due to the tariffs calculated with kindergarten math. Instead, the are chatting about Kid Rock’s tailor. Important stuff and definitely bolstering their claim to be the champions of truth. In other news, The New York Times managed to bury the Hands Off protests on page 18. Evidently, millions of citizens protesting the intentional collapse of their government by the executive branch is not worthy of front page news. By the way, whatever became of the free press, the fourth pillar of democracy?

Do you recall that one of the methods used to detect if a witch-was-a-witch was to tie the woman (or man) to a large rock and throw them into the river. If they drowned, they were not a witch. If they didn’t drown, they were proven to be a witch, dried off and summarily burned at the stake. Either way, the authorities confiscated the witches’ property. They divided-up the spoils as payment for their time.

This is the same mentality driving the madness of the current administration.* The executive cries that he is the victim of a “Witch Hunt”. He and his party tied our democracy to a rock and chucked it into the river to test whether or not it is a democracy. Lady Liberty survived their January 6th insurrection so is now being tied to the stake. She’s a democracy for sure and must be cleansed by hot gaslight fire.

By the way, whatever became of those pillars of democracy? The Legislative, the Judicial and the Free Press? I suppose they are waiting until the fire burns Lady Liberty to ashes so they, too, might enjoy the confiscation of democracy’s property.

Don’t worry. You’ll never hear the gory details on fox news or, apparently, any other purveyor of polished entertainment once known as the free press. Truth has no meaningful role to play in an authoritarian state.

*This is also the same mentality driving the DOGE: 1) Level the accusation of waste, abuse and fraud. 2) Decimate the agency. 3) When it no longer functions properly or at all, proudly proclaim it wasteful, abusive, and fraudulent. 4) Confiscate the secure data, privatize the agency in order pass the savings and profits onto the billionaire class.

Extortion Contortion[David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

“It’s all made-up.” she said. “That’s the point.”

It’s extortion. Extortion (noun): the practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats.

Currently, he extorts law practices. He extorts universities. His strategy is to make up an offense so he might exact his price. In his tariffs he claims extortion from other nations so that he might extort them. His tariffs also give him leverage over the nation’s businesses: soon he will extort them, too: he’ll suggest that he’ll remove the tariffs impacting their bottom-line if they give him what he wants.

As is true of all bullies, he pretends strength to mask his weakness. For instance, the supposed most powerful man on earth can’t seem to recover a citizen wrongly sent to hell in El Salvador. “The administration further says it lacks the power to seek his return from El Salvador’s government…” Truer words were never written: he lacks power. So, he must extort.

This is my favorite made-up offense: claiming that Columbia University tolerated antisemitism, the bully administration withheld $400 million dollars of federal funding. It’s my favorite because the made-up offense smacks of a (slightly twisted) DEI protection: he claims that he’s punishing the university for not protecting a minority group. He claims that he’s championing equality. Sounds like a liberal impulse to me!

I wonder why his dedicated DEI-esque protection of a targeted minority group doesn’t include African Americans or LGBTQ? A rhetorical question so no need to roll your eyes. His extortion exclusively serves himself, whiteness and the ultra-wealthy. It need not make sense or be consistent since it is all-made-up.

The first amendment protects the right to protest. A pro-Palestinian rally in the United States of America is not a failure to protect Jewish students. It’s a student group exercising their first amendment right. The university caved nonetheless, validating the bully’s tactic. Just as are the law practices. Just as is the congress. Just as is the now awol justice system. [note: how sad that rather than protect their student’s first amendment right, the university instead protected their bottom line…a microcosm in the tale of the collapse of democracy in the USA]

A president who resorts to extortion is not a president (a servant of the people). He is an authoritarian wanna-be (a servant to himself). He is a controller. He lacks power. It’s basic.

It makes me wonder when some courage will rise in the spines of the people and institutions he currently extorts. There’s little to be found within our borders so perhaps the rest of the world can show us actual courage by not bending the knee to this little made-up-big-man and his not-so-made-up-malfeasance.

The Way of the Dodo [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

On Tuesday we go to the polls. Again. In our state of Wisconsin there is a contentious race for the state Supreme Court. Elon Musk has dumped over 18 million dollars into the conservative candidates campaign. He is coming to the state to hand out money in exchange for votes, violating yet another law. It’s estimated that by the time this election is decided, over 100 million dollars will be poured into the race.

So many laws broken. So little consequence. So much republican fear of free and fair elections based on accurate information.

So much corruption. The signs are everywhere.

The yard signs are everywhere, too. A tug-of-war over the existence of our democracy as played-out in yard signage.

We walk a very thin line now. Razor-thin.

Oh, yes. And the wild geranium are a-poppin’. Breck is budding. The Robins are back in force. This earth will keep turning whether or not an oligarch can buy yet another election, whether or not our democracy goes the way of the Dodo bird.

You Do Or You Don’t [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

Dear maga-nation: After the events of this week it occurs to me that, although you voted – a sign that you believe in democracy – you actually have no idea what a democracy is or how it works. You voted for dictatorship – a sign that you don’t believe in democracy. Do you see my confusion?

Start here: in our democracy there are three co-equal branches of government. Co-equal means that no branch has more power than any other branch and that is by design. Each branch is meant to serve as a check-and-balance to the other two branches. By design.

Each branch has an assigned duty relative to the law: Congress, the legislative branch, makes the laws. The executive branch, the president, enforces the laws. The judiciary interprets the laws. “Interprets” means they clarify the laws – and have the power of putting on the brakes when one of the other branches strays out of bounds. The law is central. That, too, is by design: in our democracy no man is supposed to be above the law. The creation, enactment, and interpretation of law is meant to be protection against the rise of a king. The enshrinement of the law places power in the hands of the people. That’s why it is called a democracy.

This week you puffed with indignation when a judge put the brakes on the executive when he went out of bounds. You called for the impeachment of the judge. That’s akin to being outraged that your car started when you touched the ignition. Your car did what it is supposed to do so you are infuriated?

Your friends at fox encouraged outrage that a judge would dare challenge the authority of the executive. And, rather than throw a rock through your television and swear never-again to plug into a channel promoting the dismantling of democracy – something you would do if you understood how a democracy works – you puffed up with righteous misinformation. You did as you were told. You raged for the dissolution of checks-and-balances.

Again, do you see my – our – confusion?

You either do not understand why you are puffing up – or you do. And, if you do, it makes me incredibly sad. Sad for you, since you claim in loud voices to be the champions of democracy, to be avid supporters of America’s greatness (democracy) – yet you clearly have no idea how our democracy works.

Or, you do and willingly throw it away. And that makes me sadder still.

This week a judge did his job as defined in the Constitution and you acted offended. Please understand why those of us who believe in democracy – those of us who understand how the system is designed to work – are beyond rolling our eyes. Please understand why we are running out of adjectives to describe the crevasse between your angry rhetoric and your actions. You are either the very definition of ignorant: without knowledge, unlearned – or you are corrupt.

The executive, aided by an oligarch, is circumnavigating congress in an obvious destruction of the system of checks-and-balances. Circumnavigate means “to sail around” it.

In your indignant fox-fueled-puffery, you are gleefully encouraging the circumnavigation of the Constitution. You cheer the blatant disregard for the law. Disregard means “to ignore. To overlook or forget”. Disregarding the law is called corruption. Corruption means “dishonesty, fraud, criminality”.

You either don’t understand what you support – which means someday there may be hope for us to once again meet on the common ground as defined in the Constitution. You may someday wake up, unplug from the fox-cult-of-non-sense-and-anger-exploitation. I hope so. I mean that sincerely. It’s hard to watch how willingly you participate in your own fleecing. It’s impossible to understand how easily you swallow propaganda-swill.

Or, you do understand what you support. And, in that case, you are a knowing participant in fraud, a champion of corruption, a dedicated racist*, a proponent of authoritarianism – a knowing participant in the dismantling of our democracy – and, in that case, there’s nothing more for us to discuss. There is – and never has been – common ground. And I find that terribly sad.

*As I was writing this post, the despot-wanna-be resurrected segregation from its moldy grave. This comes in the wake of a dedicated – and continuing – effort to scrub the achievements and contributions of African Americans, women, people of color, LGBTQ…from our history.
