Be Second [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

you are my first (dentist) jpegBIG copy 2

In our highly competitive, goal driven, purpose seeking, we-are-number-one, pyramid topping, dog-eat-dog world, the staff of Flawed Cartoon would like to remind you that sometimes first place is not always what it’s cracked up to be. Happy Wednesday.

Make It Up [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

space invader jpegBIG copy 2

Language is beautiful. It is referential and, therefore, easily manipulated. Not all strings of letters arranged in sequences of words point to what you might expect. Thus, my fun with space invaders! Of course, it is too enticing to wade into the current pool of nonsense surrounding the phrase ‘space force.’ If you want to entertain me you’ll send me fun images of ‘space force’ misdirection. I have a few roiling in my brain that I just might draw and share with you.

Oh, and my favorite language question of the week: how is it that a sequence of marks and noises is meaningful? Well, humans have to be good at something, right?

Fly Like An Artist [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

breakaway jpg copy

This Flawed Cartoon originally came with a caption. Can you guess what it was? In selecting this week’s cartoon, Kerri and I both loved the image and rejected the caption. “It says much more without the words,” she said.

Without really intending it, a common theme emerged from our picks for this week’s melange: Unleash the power of your crayon. Living without fear. Breaking away from the flock.  Together these might make a nice set of mantra-coasters for the artist’s path.

While you consider unleashing the power of your crayon have some fun and make up a caption for today’s Flawed. Send it to us. Who knows! You just might complete the coaster set with your submission. High Honor Indeed!

Blink! [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

DeerHeadlights BIGcopy copy

One of my least favorite self discoveries is that I am obsessive. And compulsive (so I’m told…). If I latch onto a task, a painting, a project, an idea,…, it is nearly impossible for me to let it go. I am a deer in the headlights. A moth to flame. Fixated. Mesmerized. Obsessed. Compulsive. Don’t ask Kerri for examples!

Standing squarely on the pavement of the back road of life, transfixed by the headlights coming my way, I am trying to learn to blink. For all of those in the singular-focus-club, this Flawed’s for you. Blink!

Say What! [it’s Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

archaeologistfordinner jpegBIG copy 2

This might be the final Flawed Cartoon we post so I wanted it to be on of my favorites. This is not Kerri’s favorite. It’s not even in her top 50! She likes her humor to live on the light side. I generally guffaw at the darker tones. When I drew this one it made me laugh heartily for a very long time. Who can’t identify with the archeologist? Just when you think your bad day can’t get any worse….

Bring Out Your Humor [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

ChickenStress BIGcopy copy 2

…and wouldn’t the world be a better place if our stress-default-setting was laughter instead of worry? It would be an odd world but we’d be a healthier human herd.

Don’t get me wrong, if I were a zebra being pursued by a lion I’d want my adrenaline rush to help me skee-daddle! Some stresses are useful! But, in the absence of a real lion, laughter might be more useful than screaming, fretting, worrying, or general angst. Just imagine being stuck in traffic and rather than pounding the steering wheel, rather than sending your blood pressure through the roof, rather than honking your horn or screaming at others stuck in traffic, you laughed. And, your fellow commuters laughed, too! Pretty funny, huh?

Wiggle Your Toes [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

magicisnotanexactscience jpegBIG copy 2

I hear Quinn laughing, “No one really knows what they are doing!” That’s cold comfort when being rolled into surgery or sitting with my mouth wide open in the dentist’s chair. I have to admit, his laughter was infectious and I usually find myself laughing when I realize too late (again) the upside AND downside of the seed he planted so long ago in my philosophy.

Yesterday’s Two Artists post was about trust. Today’s Flawed Cartoon is a mirthful reminder of what happens when you don’t listen to that inner voice that says, “Don’t get into that box!”

Let It Catch You [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

Pinochio BIGcopy copy 2

Although I wish I could claim otherwise, I drew this before our most-current age of Truthiness (thank you, Stephen Colbert).

All those years ago when I first saw a photographer alter a photograph with Photoshop, I wondered what in the absence of photographic proof would become the baseline for truth? I’ve lived long enough to have my answer.

Now, on this July 4th, amidst the collapse of civil dialogue, the dearth of shared values, I wonder in the absence of any baseline for truth, how long before truth circles around and catches up to us? Of this I am sure: Photoshop will be of no use.

[Doesn’t it just make you think of Yeats? The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.]

Read The Instructions [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

PullRipCord BIGcopy copy 2

I am that guy. I like to figure things out. When I fix things I always seem to have spare parts left over, nuts and bits that came out in disassembly but seem to have no place in reassembly. There is a special bucket in the basement for the leftovers – just in case.

if you'd like to see FLAWED CARTOON copyI read everything but instructions. I’ll spend an hour with a poem but nary a moment with an assembly guide. If I’d ever had little kids, they’d have found me sleeping by the tree on Christmas morning with oddly assembled gifts (or not assembled gifts) and a bucket of spare parts. Kerri tells me it’s a guy thing.
