A Run On The Wheel [David’s blog on Two Artists Tuesday]

One of our first FLAWED cartoons features a gerbil running hard on a gerbil wheel while his supervisor-gerbil watches, smokes a cigarette, and says, “This work thing sucks.”

I found a revisioned truth in that original cartoon drawn over a decade ago. Kerri calls it “The Oligarchy versus The People. There is a class of gerbil that works hard on the wheel. There is a class of gerbil that profits from the work.

This morning while making breakfast I had another revelation about the cartoon. With the latest release of Epstein File documents, with the number of rich and powerful white men named in the files, with the damning accusations and implications running rampant through the files, I was struck by the blaring absence of investigations into those men. There is a class of gerbil that is subject to the law. There is a class of gerbil that the law refuses to touch.

The department of deception (formerly known as the department of justice) is refusing to release at least 50% of the documents. Given the picture painted in the latest batch of releases and the 100% certainty that they are covering-up for the worst-of the-worst, one can only wonder if there is a bottom to the depravity. Actually, we already know the answer to that question.

Though, there is a subtle reversal of roles happening on the ol’ gerbil wheel. We-the-gerbils-that-do-the-work are witnessing the power-gerbils running scared – and running faster and faster to escape the truth of their twisted lives. They will find, as we have, that a run on the wheel goes nowhere. They can run ever-faster but they cannot escape the truth of the wheel. And while they run they can be certain that we are watching them sweat.

There may be some justice after all.

No Words [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

It’s ironic to me that the “progressives” – Bernie Sanders and AOC – are waging an all out effort to preserve our democracy (one might use the word “conserve”) while the “conservatives” are waging a campaign of destruction meant to change the very essence of our governance; they’re calling it “progress”.

The Republican party of “small government” and “fiscal responsibility” are once again blowing the deficit into outer space while weaponizing the government to strong arm anyone who opposes their agenda or suggests that the Constitution ought to be honored.

Tucked into the grotesque big beautiful bill is language that “disarms the courts.” With the Republican Congress already cowed, the courts are the only remaining line separating us – a democracy – from an authoritarian state. The Republican members of the house actually voted to forward a bill that effectively ends our system of government. Is their a word more appropriate than “betrayal”? Perfidy? Treachery?

Their bill, the horror that they call big and beautiful, blatantly and without shame takes from the poor and gives to the rich – a reverse Robin Hood maneuver.

There just aren’t enough words to describe how base, how vile, how utterly chicken-hearted…they convene their sham-committees in the dark of night because they know how repugnant their big beautiful bill actually is. They know. They do not care. Neglect? Disregard? What words can we use to describe this level of depravity?

Vampires work at night because the light of day is lethal to them. Republicans, like vampires – as is apparent in their big bill – desire to drink the life-blood of the most vulnerable. We can only hope that there is enough light let into their chamber to kill this horror-bill before it sucks the life-blood from the most vulnerable people of this nation – and for no greater purpose than giving a massive tax cut to the already ultra-wealthy…and calling it progress.

No words.

[There is, however a ubiquitous question: What do we do?]

Take It Back [David’s blog on KS Friday]

Last evening, watching the sky transform from brilliant pink to deep purple and orange, we ate an entire bag of Lays Wavy potato chips. Kerri called it, “political angst eating”.

20 told us that he had to stop watching The Handmaid’s Tale because it was too close to the reality we currently face in the nation.

This morning two relevant-to-the-moment pieces of art rolled across our screens and collided. The first is Lighthouse, a new song by Stevie Nicks. In this mind-boggling time that women’s rights are under attack – that women are under attack – it is a call to action. “Is it a nightmare?” she asks. “It is unless you save it/ and that’s that/Unless you stand up/And take it back…”

The second, ROED, a short 10 minute documentary film by Dawn Lambing. It takes a page from Project 2025 and imagines what the nation will look like for women if the authoritarian maga get their wish. While watching it I realized that it is already the present reality for women in many red states. Watch it. This is no longer an exercise of “what if”. It’s here.

The Atlantic recently published an article, The Republican Freak Show: Like the man who leads it, the GOP is not just incidentally grotesque. It is grotesque at its core. In the article, Peter Wehner writes, “Since 2016 they have been at war with reality, delighting in their dime-store nihilism, creating “alternative facts” and tortured explanations to justify lawlessness and moral depravity and derangement of their leader…None of this is hidden…No one who supports the Republican party, who casts a vote for Trump and for his MAGA acolytes, can say they don’t know. They know.”

They know. It is the answer to the question we ask each day after our daily horror-troll of the news: “How can they not know.” It’s time to ask a better question. It’s time to stop pretending that they are ignorant or continually justifying their unwavering support of their depraved candidate with generous excuses like,” They just don’t see it”. They do see it.

They know. It is what they want for our nation. Women stripped of their fundamental rights. Mass deportations. The suspension of the Constitution. Book bans. The gutting of Medicare and Social Security. The elimination of the Department of Education. It goes on and on. Dangerous stuff worthy of a dystopian novel. Yet here we are. If you believe the polls, nearly 50% of our nation think the freak show is the way to go.

They know.

It is what makes Kerri and me eat entire bags of Lays Wavy potato chips. It’s why 20 stopped watching The Handmaid’s Tale.

“Is it a nightmare?” Stevie Nicks asks. Yes. Yes it is. “And that’s that/Unless you stand up/And take it back…”
