Cleansed By Gaslight Fire [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

I understand that over in fox-news-land they barely mention the stock-market-free-fall due to the tariffs calculated with kindergarten math. Instead, the are chatting about Kid Rock’s tailor. Important stuff and definitely bolstering their claim to be the champions of truth. In other news, The New York Times managed to bury the Hands Off protests on page 18. Evidently, millions of citizens protesting the intentional collapse of their government by the executive branch is not worthy of front page news. By the way, whatever became of the free press, the fourth pillar of democracy?

Do you recall that one of the methods used to detect if a witch-was-a-witch was to tie the woman (or man) to a large rock and throw them into the river. If they drowned, they were not a witch. If they didn’t drown, they were proven to be a witch, dried off and summarily burned at the stake. Either way, the authorities confiscated the witches’ property. They divided-up the spoils as payment for their time.

This is the same mentality driving the madness of the current administration.* The executive cries that he is the victim of a “Witch Hunt”. He and his party tied our democracy to a rock and chucked it into the river to test whether or not it is a democracy. Lady Liberty survived their January 6th insurrection so is now being tied to the stake. She’s a democracy for sure and must be cleansed by hot gaslight fire.

By the way, whatever became of those pillars of democracy? The Legislative, the Judicial and the Free Press? I suppose they are waiting until the fire burns Lady Liberty to ashes so they, too, might enjoy the confiscation of democracy’s property.

Don’t worry. You’ll never hear the gory details on fox news or, apparently, any other purveyor of polished entertainment once known as the free press. Truth has no meaningful role to play in an authoritarian state.

*This is also the same mentality driving the DOGE: 1) Level the accusation of waste, abuse and fraud. 2) Decimate the agency. 3) When it no longer functions properly or at all, proudly proclaim it wasteful, abusive, and fraudulent. 4) Confiscate the secure data, privatize the agency in order pass the savings and profits onto the billionaire class.

Hit The Button [David’s blog on Merely A Thought Monday]

For an unrelated project research, I was reading an article about the tactics used by psychological abusers in a relationship; I found myself reading about the tactics employed by the current resident of the White House. Gaslighting, negging, emotional manipulation. Isolationism. And DARVO, a new acronym to me: Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender…a very common tactic, in which the aggressor uses different elements of reality to cast the victim in the role of abuser and position themselves as the victim. Of course, this is not a new revelation. Plenty of people are writing about it. Plenty of people have been writing about it since 2016.

I suppose the penny just dropped for me.

“The penny dropped”. It’s an adage that comes from a coin getting stuck in a slot machine and the user having to wait for – or jiggle the machine – to get the penny to drop.

The most chilling thing about the article – the jiggle that made my penny drop – was not something in the article. It was the two choices at the very bottom of the site: “Emergency Exit” and “Clear Browser History”. A quick escape just in case the reader is afraid to get caught by the abuser. They are on the site because they are scared and trying to find help. They are looking for a way out of the abuse.

I wondered what happened – what had to happen – for them to finally admit to themselves that the violence is not normal. Were they abused one too many times and the penny dropped? What made them finally admit that their abuser is not the victim? They are. What finally popped the illusion that their relationship is not normal? It is dangerous. The buttons at the bottom of the site served as a testament to the truth of the relationship.

We generally write a few days ahead and lately it’s been almost impossible to stay in front of the abuse of our system. Each day there is another act of aggression. Violence enacted on the democratic system and the citizenry. By the time we publish, our thoughts are old news. Yet another blow has already been delivered and left a deep bruise on the face of the nation.

And, now, the abuser is spilling his aggression onto the world.

The Republican party is married to the abuser. Their silence during this daily beating is deafening. The Congress’ participation in the abuser’s aggression is disheartening since they were the original target of his violence. They are classic: filled with fear and whipped into compliance, they defend and enable their abuser. For them, the penny has dropped. Instead of seeking an exit to the abusive relationship they wear the smarmy sad mask of see-no-evil.

I wonder when they will acknowledge the choice at the bottom of the page: Emergency exit. They alone have the power to end the abuse. The Constitution is hanging on by its fingernails but it grants them the power to stop the bludgeoning of democracy. There’s still time.

There is a third button at the bottom of the site page: Contact Us. It takes courage to ask for help. It is possibly dangerous but certainly self-loving to exit an abusive relationship. It requires support. It necessitates protection. All the Republican congress need do is hit that button. They could stop the abuse today. Their relationship with the bully is toxic and they know it. It is not normal. And when it destroys our democracy it will take them – and us – with it.

It takes courage to hit the emergency exit button. Congress – all of them – need to remember that they are the button for We-The-People. It is the reason we have in our constitutional design three co-equal branches of government: protection against an authoritarian takeover. They are now the button for the rest of the civilized world, too. We are en masse pressing the button. We are wondering why they are not responding.

They should know that, were they to find the courage to hit the emergency exit button, to do what they know they need to do, we would be there to help. As citizens of the United States. As servants to democracy. We share a common abuser and it is not each other. It is the current resident of the White House, everyday casting himself as a victim while he does violence to others – to all of us.

It’s way past time to stop the abuse. This is not normal.

What Grows In Us [David’s blog on DR Thursday]

For several months we kept a book on our bedside table: Benedictus by John O’Donohue. It’s a book of poems in the form of blessings. Each morning we’d select one at random, and read it aloud. It was one of our strategies for starting the day with a meditation on goodness rather than a doomscroll through the news.

It’s an ages-old adage: where you place your focus grows. Focus on fear and that’s what you’ll see. Focus on your blessings and that’s what populates your garden.

I believe in the adage but I also know that no mind, heart or soul is healthy if singularly focused. I also believe fear can be useful, anger can be generative, and grace is most often found on a walk through despair. Focus is not an end goal or an achievement. It is not meant to fortress us from “negative” emotions since experiencing the full spectrum of emotion is, after all, how we learn and grow. A full palette of feeling is what makes us human. Focus is the choice of a conscious mind.

Fear can be a prayer. Loss is one of the many shades of love.

I’m aware that most of what we write about these days is about the dismantling of democracy. Some of my pals are worried that I am lost in a dark land or too focused on the negative. And with each outreach I am reaffirmed in the certainty that I am a fortunate man to have so many who care so much about me. I do not write this as a platitude. I know to my bones that I am a fortunate man.

I am fortunate because I have known shame and terror. I have made titanically stupid choices. I have learned and questioned and followed my wandering heart into every valley that beckoned and climbed every mountain that called. I have fought battles that did not exist and found my seemingly good intention was destructive for others. I have felt deeply. I ran when I should have stood my ground. I betrayed myself. All of these experiences have expanded my life-palette and given me some small understanding of the power of focus. These experiences introduced me to the gorgeous people who now surround me, who worry that I am lost in a dark land.

This morning we sipped coffee in bed. Dogga was asleep on the quilt at our feet. We listened to the bird chorus come alive with the rising sun. We held hands as we always do. At the exact same moment, we had the overwhelming realization that life does not get any better. I was so taken with the gorgeousness of being alive that words failed me. We sat in utter appreciation of all that we enjoy.

That happens for us multiple times every day. It is where we choose to place our focus. It is what grows in us. It is the same place – this love of life and gratitude for all we enjoy – that necessitates writing with such urgency about what’s happening in our nation. We do not write to solve a problem. We do not write to complain or blame.

Do you recall the story of Kitty Genovese? She was a young woman who was raped and murdered in NYC in 1964. Although many people heard her cries for help, either no one listening recognized the horror of her plight – which lasted over half an hour – or no one cared. In any event, no one called the police; no one came to her aid. It was the inception of what we know as the “bystander effect”: everyone thinking someone else will take the responsibility. Focus elsewhere.

Our national house is on fire. The rights of women around this nation are being brutalized. The rights of all people of this nation are under assault. It’s no time to be a bystander. We write because Kitty is screaming. All that we love and enjoy makes it impossible to turn away and turn up the volume of the television. Were we capable of turning away, were we actually pretending that what is happening is not actually happening – as is the republican congress – then we would be in a very dark place, indeed.

It’s In Their Plan [David’s blog on Merely A Thought Monday]

“Wisconsin is evenly split between the parties, but when Republicans control the legislature and the supreme court, they suppress voting and heavily gerrymander the state in their favor…Currently, the state gerrymander gives Republicans 75% of the state’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives although voting in 2024 was virtually dead even.” ~ Heather Cox Richardson, Letters from an American, March 28, 2025

Wisconsin is a perfect example, a fractal, of what literally ails our nation. In brief: republicans do not believe in democracy. If republicans actually believed in democracy, they’d spend less time suppressing the vote, gerrymandering, misinforming, fearmongering – and more time bringing relevant ideas to democratic governance. They’d earn votes rather than stifle voters.

If they were honest with what they actually represent, they’d never win an election.

The current occupant of the White House knows he cannot legislate his Project 2025 agenda. It is so wildly unpopular that he disavowed it until after he won the election. Now, in a fit of unconstitutionality, he jams it through by executive order. He wraps it in a thick veil of lie and misinformation.

If you are paying attention you’ll note that republican representatives in Congress are not showing up to their town halls. They are afraid to face their angry constituents and accept responsibility for their (in)action. And, since taking responsibility is not in their wheelhouse, they’ve invented yet another fantasy to explain the discord: the evil libs are paying people to rabble-rouse.

At least the republicans are consistent up and down the food chain. “It’s all a witch hunt”. “Not my fault.” “Never heard of it”.

The nation’s pet oligarch is coming to town. He’s trying to buy the election for the open state supreme court seat. “Musk has told voters that if Crawford wins, “then the Democrats will attempt to redraw the districts and cause Wisconsin to lose two Republican seats.” Not only has Musk said he is going to Wisconsin to speak before the election, but also he is handing out checks to voters who sign a petition against “activist judges,” a suggestion that it would not be fair to unskew the Republican gerrymander. Last night, Musk advertised a contest that would award two voters a million dollars each, with the condition that the winners had to have already voted.” ~ Heather Cox Richardson

To be clear, in the current republican world view, an “activist judge” is one that does their job, interpreting and clarifying the law, serving as a check-and-balance to the other branches of government. An “activist judge” upholds their oath to the Constitution.

Paying voters for their votes to maintain gerrymandered maps is a well-worn-page from their playbook. It’s also an act of desperation. Again, if they believed in democracy, if they actually believed in our system of governance, they would attempt to win on principle rather than with a festival of misinformation and blatant corruption.

Whoops! I forgot. Their weak man in the White House is dismantling our democracy in favor of fascism. In an authoritarian government, a judge’s job is to facilitate the criminality of the leadership so why should it be a surprise that the oligarch is buying votes for the republican candidate for the state Supreme Court?

It occurs to me that this may be our last free and fair election. Voting matters more now than ever. After Tuesday we’ll either have a court that fights corruption and attempts to preserve our democracy – or one that plays for payola. On Tuesday, we’ll either send a message to the silent republican majority in congress and prompt them to apply some brakes to the fascist takeover of our country or we’ll greenlight the gaslighters, watch as they comply with the weak man and eliminate our right to vote altogether. It is, after all, what the weak man promised: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told Christians on Friday that if they vote for him this November, “in four years, you don’t have to vote again. We’ll have it fixed so good, you’re not gonna have to vote.” ~ Reuters, July 27, 2024

Voting is unique to a democracy. Fascism, not so much. They’re not even trying to hide it. It is, after all, in their plan.

The Way of the Dodo [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

On Tuesday we go to the polls. Again. In our state of Wisconsin there is a contentious race for the state Supreme Court. Elon Musk has dumped over 18 million dollars into the conservative candidates campaign. He is coming to the state to hand out money in exchange for votes, violating yet another law. It’s estimated that by the time this election is decided, over 100 million dollars will be poured into the race.

So many laws broken. So little consequence. So much republican fear of free and fair elections based on accurate information.

So much corruption. The signs are everywhere.

The yard signs are everywhere, too. A tug-of-war over the existence of our democracy as played-out in yard signage.

We walk a very thin line now. Razor-thin.

Oh, yes. And the wild geranium are a-poppin’. Breck is budding. The Robins are back in force. This earth will keep turning whether or not an oligarch can buy yet another election, whether or not our democracy goes the way of the Dodo bird.

Follow The Cairns [David’s blog on Flawed Wednesday]

Cairns are trail markers. They show the way.

I want to stack a series of giant cairns for the red-hats who are lost in the land of foxy misinformation. They have lost their way. I’m reminded that in our Revolutionary War, the struggle for our independence, the forces of the crown were known as red coats. The patriots wore blue. History definitely repeats itself, at least in color identification. The red-hats are fighting for the reestablishment of the crown.

The red-hats vehemently support their wanna-be-king, a servant to the oligarchs. He intends to tax the poor to fill the coffers of the rich. His army of red-hats have not awakened to the reality that they are the targets of his taxation. They are the indentured servants of his dreams. They are the dupes in his plan.

Usury inevitably reveals itself and slaps awake even the most deluded follower (Rudy Giuliani not withstanding).

I can state this with absolute certainty: if hear one more bloated Republican bloviate that government has no meaningful role to play in our society I’m going to vomit. Think for a moment: they want the poor to carry the tax burden but be exempt themselves. While they bully universities into ignorance, annihilate public education, actively cut social services to the 90%, attack Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security…while simultaneously removing any regulation and/or oversight to their business plunder. Their north star is embarrassingly shallow: permanent tax cuts for the wealthy few. All of this, of course, requires a government to enact. It’s not the absence of government that the reds slobber for; it is a government dedicated to exploiting the many for the sake of the few. They are disingenuous at best. Sadistic is probably a more honest adjective.

It’s not government that they despise – it’s a government that serves ALL people that they wish to eradicate.

There are glimmers of hope. Our nation has a few vocal cairns emerging. Bernie Sanders and AOC are holding rallies that draw thousands: people wearing blue (metaphorically). People who believe in democracy. People who value learning above ignorance, truth above fox-fantasy. People who know that the chicken-little running around the barnyard screaming, “Socialism” or “DEI” is the puppet of wealthy elites attempting to scare the fox-hypnotized-gullible-maga-masses with scary straw men.

The blues aren’t buying a word of it. They’re following the cairns that lead to a healthy tradition of awakening the American spirit – the same spirit that gave us the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Cesar Chavez…The Constitution, the Bill of Rights…and a democracy worth fighting for.

You Do Or You Don’t [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

Dear maga-nation: After the events of this week it occurs to me that, although you voted – a sign that you believe in democracy – you actually have no idea what a democracy is or how it works. You voted for dictatorship – a sign that you don’t believe in democracy. Do you see my confusion?

Start here: in our democracy there are three co-equal branches of government. Co-equal means that no branch has more power than any other branch and that is by design. Each branch is meant to serve as a check-and-balance to the other two branches. By design.

Each branch has an assigned duty relative to the law: Congress, the legislative branch, makes the laws. The executive branch, the president, enforces the laws. The judiciary interprets the laws. “Interprets” means they clarify the laws – and have the power of putting on the brakes when one of the other branches strays out of bounds. The law is central. That, too, is by design: in our democracy no man is supposed to be above the law. The creation, enactment, and interpretation of law is meant to be protection against the rise of a king. The enshrinement of the law places power in the hands of the people. That’s why it is called a democracy.

This week you puffed with indignation when a judge put the brakes on the executive when he went out of bounds. You called for the impeachment of the judge. That’s akin to being outraged that your car started when you touched the ignition. Your car did what it is supposed to do so you are infuriated?

Your friends at fox encouraged outrage that a judge would dare challenge the authority of the executive. And, rather than throw a rock through your television and swear never-again to plug into a channel promoting the dismantling of democracy – something you would do if you understood how a democracy works – you puffed up with righteous misinformation. You did as you were told. You raged for the dissolution of checks-and-balances.

Again, do you see my – our – confusion?

You either do not understand why you are puffing up – or you do. And, if you do, it makes me incredibly sad. Sad for you, since you claim in loud voices to be the champions of democracy, to be avid supporters of America’s greatness (democracy) – yet you clearly have no idea how our democracy works.

Or, you do and willingly throw it away. And that makes me sadder still.

This week a judge did his job as defined in the Constitution and you acted offended. Please understand why those of us who believe in democracy – those of us who understand how the system is designed to work – are beyond rolling our eyes. Please understand why we are running out of adjectives to describe the crevasse between your angry rhetoric and your actions. You are either the very definition of ignorant: without knowledge, unlearned – or you are corrupt.

The executive, aided by an oligarch, is circumnavigating congress in an obvious destruction of the system of checks-and-balances. Circumnavigate means “to sail around” it.

In your indignant fox-fueled-puffery, you are gleefully encouraging the circumnavigation of the Constitution. You cheer the blatant disregard for the law. Disregard means “to ignore. To overlook or forget”. Disregarding the law is called corruption. Corruption means “dishonesty, fraud, criminality”.

You either don’t understand what you support – which means someday there may be hope for us to once again meet on the common ground as defined in the Constitution. You may someday wake up, unplug from the fox-cult-of-non-sense-and-anger-exploitation. I hope so. I mean that sincerely. It’s hard to watch how willingly you participate in your own fleecing. It’s impossible to understand how easily you swallow propaganda-swill.

Or, you do understand what you support. And, in that case, you are a knowing participant in fraud, a champion of corruption, a dedicated racist*, a proponent of authoritarianism – a knowing participant in the dismantling of our democracy – and, in that case, there’s nothing more for us to discuss. There is – and never has been – common ground. And I find that terribly sad.

*As I was writing this post, the despot-wanna-be resurrected segregation from its moldy grave. This comes in the wake of a dedicated – and continuing – effort to scrub the achievements and contributions of African Americans, women, people of color, LGBTQ…from our history.

It’s Basic [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

Basic = Fundamental. Essential. Rudimentary. Elemental. What you see is what you get.

What we are seeing in this administration and what we are getting is pretty much what we expected: Corruption. Greed. Incompetence. It’s basic. There is no mystery – at least to those of us who read Project 2025 and were not intellectually-blunted or morally misguided by the fox or any other Rupert Murdoch fantasy rag*.

It’s basic: a reality tv star is…well, made-up for tv. A character. Not real. A contrivance for entertainment. A fiction. And so an empty suit made for tv now sits behind the resolute desk and plays the role of president for ratings but has no idea what it means to run a nation. He certainly knows how to bilk people. He has a proven track record of running organizations into the ground. He is famously unplugged from verifiable truth. A lifelong bully. Is it any wonder the markets are tanking and our allies are holding their noses and walking away?

It’s basic. Predictable. Obvious. We gave an oligarch and a made-for-tv-flimflam-man the keys to the White House so should not be surprised by the rapid pilfering.

Basically, the title of Bret Stephens opinion piece in the NY Times says it all: Democracy Dies in Dumbness.

Opossum Is Asking [David’s blog on DR Thursday]

It was the second time we saw the baby opossum. The first time it was with its mother. The moment they saw us they beat a hasty retreat to their den . It was a cold day and no one had walked the trail since the polar freeze. We surprised them.

This time we rounded the bend and the baby was perfectly still, standing in the middle of the trail. It was as if it was waiting for us. We stopped and returned its stare. After a moment or two it slowly waddled into the safety of the tall grass.

Later, at home, I looked up the symbolism of an opossum crossing your path.

“…in essence, Opossum is beckoning you to use your brain, your sense of drama, a surprise to leap over some barrier to your progress.” (Medicine Cards) Survival. Resourcefulness. Opossums are adapters and thrive in challenging and changing environments.

It’s considered a very good omen and right now, in our rapidly changing and challenging environment, we could use a good omen. And, the message within the symbol matched our concerns of late: how do we become more resourceful in order to survive the havoc being wreaked on our nation? It’s an open question for us, an ongoing conversation.

Last night I had a rare text exchange with my younger brother. “The near future looks bleak but we need to focus on what we really care about and can influence,” he wrote. “I have a wife, daughters, dogs, and a community of friends. I’m still blessed in challenging times.” Our exchange reminded me of the aspect of the opossum that resonated most with me: adapt to thrive in a challenging and changing environment.

To thrive we need to focus on what we care about and can influence.

Bernie Sanders came through town this weekend and thousands of people attended his rally. I was heartened by the energy and the overwhelming turnout. What we need to do to influence the current course of this criminally-stupid-administration: show up, speak out and call out the hypocrisy. Or all of the above. En masse. Non-stop.

When we come together to protect what we care about we thrive. It seems opossum is asking us to use our brains, unleash our sense of drama, so we might surprise the authoritarian and leap over the barriers he/they erect to our progress. There is power in a collective focus. There is unstoppable energy in the collective action of the people. That power and energy is the beating heart of a democracy.

Talk About It [David’s blog on saturday morning smack-dab]

In our blue bubble it is a five alarm fire and it’s all we talk about. The methodical destruction of democracy.

In the red bubble…well, given their discourse there’s nothing unusual happening. The dismantling of democracy is what they voted for. Their conversation runs the gamut from cute kittens to insta-pot recipes to hyper-patriotic remembrances. Anything but…

I’ve found in almost every case that if I try to discuss the disjoint in our bubble reality, I’m met by the red-voters with the phrase, “We don’t talk about it.” Pulling status…as if ignorance (ignoring reality) is the entrance fee to the maga-country club. Republican constituents mimicking their representatives in the House and the Senate: hear-no-evil, see-no-evil…speak-no-truth.

But what about this? It’s one example of a multitude: the first amendment protects our right to assemble and express our views through protest. The tyrant-wannabe recently posted that protesters on college campuses will be expelled or arrested and that federal funding will be withheld from universities that allow “illegal” protests [for grins, the source of my link is fox news]. And then, completely unclear on the concept (the Constitution), he thanked the people of the nation for our “attention to this matter”.

There is so much that we need to talk about.
