Deny! [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

idonothaveabignose jpegBIG copy 2

I am in denial. I had perfect eyesight for the first 45 years of my life. And then things went blurry. I understand they invented this cool thing called glasses – and I even own a pair – but I lost the instruction manual and have no idea how to operate them so they remain untouched on my shelf. Despite the progressive blur I maintain that my eyesight is perfect and merely on an extended hiatus. It’ll be back.

Pass It On [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

MiceWelcomeMat BIGcopy copy 2

It’s best not to pay attention to most lyrics of nursery rhymes and, if you do, it is wise not to ask, “What does that mean?” Just sing to your little babe the words that reach into a far distant past so that someday, your baby all grown up might hum the sweet tune and also stop and ask, “Wait! What does this mean?”

if you'd like to see FLAWED CARTOON copyIt is, after all, how traditions are passed.

Eat Well [it’s Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

revisedflawedcartoonPRIMARYimage BOX copy 2

snakehydrantproduct BAR copy

Of this snake Confucius might have said, “Swallow the hydrant, expect the firetruck.”

John, a master carpenter, used to say of my theatre construction techniques, “Penny wise and pound foolish.” I built things to last for the run of the play. He built things to last beyond the nuclear winter. I told him that the cockroaches would have really nice furniture. “And Twinkies,” he’d add. Too true. A Twinkie, like his furniture, was made to last forever.

My favorite aphorism of the year comes from Master David Miller. He was preparing to direct a play called The Arsonists, so immediate and relevant for our political times. When I asked him to sum it up he said, “If you invite an arsonist into your home you shouldn’t be surprised when your house burns down.”

We are, after all, what we eat. Narratives and Twinkies alike.

Acquire Taste [it’s Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

It came as a great shock to me to learn that I was hard to live with. Well, actually, that is a lie. I’ve known it for years but hoped no one else (read: Kerri) noticed. Well, she noticed. I think she was on to my game from the start but for some reason decided to focus on the good bits. Lately, I’ve been telling her that I am like a good wine and will get better with age. That, too, is probably a lie, but I think this time she might have bought my line! At least she is giving me another day so there’s a good chance she might someday think I am perfect! A boy can dream….

From studio melange on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday, a nod to acquired tastes everywhere.

Say, “Oopsies!” [it’s Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

IMGSewingHand copy 2OOPSIES product BOX BAR copy

Working with fabric is and always has been a mystery to me. My grandfather had a sewing machine repair business so you could assume that sewing machines are in my blood. They are not.  Among the stranger episodes of my life was my unsolicited acceptance into a graduate program for costume design. They liked my drawings and offered me a full ride. I actually went and provided hours of amusement and a lifetime of what-was-he-thinking stories for my professors and peers. I can draw anything. Just don’t ask me to sew it.

This Flawed Cartoon might be autobiographical. Although it is possible that I never sewed myself to a garment [‘garment’ is a word I use to betray my status as a costume shop veteran], it is also possible that I did. Happy Flawed Cartoon Wednesday.

Design A Single Week

smaller product recap 5:12 copy 2

This image took my breath away when Kerri showed me. And so, we decided to share it.

A brief explanation: many weeks ago, standing amidst the stacks of music, paintings, cartoons, and designs that we’d created, work that populated proposals & submission after submission after submission but had yet to find an audience, we decided to create our own channel to share it. We called the channel “the melange,” a medley, a daily offer of a design, cartoon, painting or piece of music and the thoughts they inspired in us. We launched it 14 weeks ago.

And, because we are artists trying to make a living, we established a product line through society6.com for each day of the melange [if a painting is out of reach perhaps a cool tote bag or fine art print is more accessible]. This morning, as we prepared the multiple sites and completed our writing for the upcoming week’s melange, Kerri showed me a compilation image of all the products she’d designed just THIS WEEK!

Look at this image and multiply what you see by 14 weeks. Breathless. And so much fun.

GPS [on Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

A Flawed Cartoon from studio melange to lift your Wednesday.

granny gps jpegBIG copy

When my pals gather and drink wine on Sunday evenings we often talk about the trials and travails of having aging parents. The stories are often hilarious and painful collisions of will. I am the most fortunate in the group. My parents are still positioning themselves. However, that does not prevent me from having another glass of wine. I know what’s coming. I also know my pals and I are not so far from our own days of willful insistence.

On this Flawed Cartoon Wednesday, a loving nod to caregivers and receivers alike, a toast to all involved in the life-dance of positioning and re-positioning services.

Call It In The Air! [It’s Flawed Cartoon Wednesday]

A spot of Flawed Cartoon humor from studio melange.

MiceCheese Bigcopy copy 2

Is it a game of chance or is the toss rigged? I, too, am an idealistic, trusting mouse and never think to check the coin or calculate the odds before the toss. And, another question comes to mind: even if I know where to find my cheese, is the cheese worth the pursuit?

Existential questions from the melange to further confound your Wednesday.

When Sled Dogs Dream [It’s Flawed Cartoon Wednesday!]

From studio melange, a giggle to lift you over the hump and share with pals.

sled dogs dream FRAMED PRINT copy

our flawed homage to winter and its passing

Tripper Dog-Dog-Dog dreams. Late at night I hear his paws flicking the floor of his crate, the echo of his dream-bark breaks the surface as a yip. I imagine he is dreaming of chasing squirrels or racing after birds, two of his favorite real-life activities. But what if…. Maybe he dreams of having opposable thumbs, of scooping kibble from the bin whenever he wants to! Maybe he dreams of taking me on walks, and yanking my leash when I pull to greet other humans! “Sit!” he barks. “Look at me!” he commands. Perhaps he dreams of tossing me a cookie when I am good, or making me do tricks to earn my cookie!!!

And so, I imagine that sled dogs must also dream.
